Let's discuss our treatment of the mentally ill; our laws which tie our handsagainst the dangerous, ostensibly in favor of their right to autonomy...while disallowing others their right to safety, protection & even life.
Stop using this tragedy as a cynical, malicious political billy club...Just STOP.
Krauthammer -- the lone, brave voice in the wilderness.
Fuzz~ You're exactly right. These people need help, & society needs (in worst scenarios) protection from them. Feel good ideas work on paper & in Hollywood...
Duck~ Yeah, yeah...swapping labels. I'm not impressed. After all the MSM spent the first WEEK beating conservatives over the head w/ this guy, then trashing people like Palin who dare to respond.
Attach an incredibly emotional and catastrophic event to your political enemy in the grasping-at-strawest kind of way, and what do you get? Good ole Goebbels style propaganda. It doesn't matter that it has all turned up to be hooey, the impact on the weak of mind was made. Done,... next?
Funny, I was looking at the USA Today briefly and there was a head line discussing the trial and referring to Loughner's "guilt". This was odd. Guilt? Since when has anyone from this rag proposed that anyone but Palin killed those people?
BTW, I know my last comment wasn't a response to the post. I watched most of this on your blog a few days ago. It was interesting, I didn't realize that Krauthammer was a psychologist. He still a sharp dude though :)
Dan~ Your comment is just in time for my 14 y/o's Social Studies project presentation on 'propaganda.' I'm gonna read it to him in the a.m. before taking him to the bus stop. Interesting, his teacher has tried really hard to frame propaganda in neutral terms. Of course, I've taught him otherwise.
"Since when has anyone from this rag proposed that anyone but Palin killed those people?" ...and of course you know that's why the Teaparty MUST be stopped, or we'll all end up dead in the streets.
Heaven help us.
Oh, & Dr. K isn't a psychologist. He's a psychiatrist -- as in Medical Doctor, etc. Which, in my book, gives him that much more credibility.
Right on!!! I think it's key that the myth of neutral be exposed. I have a suggestion for a book that may help you to organize your strategy for running interference between your son and misguided teachers. (though it's not about propaganda per se) It's called "Relativism, Both feet planted firmly in mid air". It is one of the best feet-on-the-ground books I've encountered for many reasons. It's not onerous to read, it meets us where we live, and it demolishes the deception of neutral and exposes self defeating arguments. (not that I can see that you don't hold your own anyway) Just a thought.
Psychiatrist! that's what I meant to say, I think.
Excellent book suggestion, thanks! I added it to my "to read" shelf @ 'goodreads'. And thanks for the compliment re: holding my own -- sometimes I wonder!

Because the guy was described as a psychotic nut and a pothead that automatically makes the guy a "liberal."

Hope all is well, friend.
Political Correctness running wild.
These people need help not feel good ideas.
